NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN ARTISTS, INC

FLORIDA CHAPTER  SPRING / 2011

President’s Message

What a busy season we've had! My first year as president of NAWA Florida Chapter has been a whirlwind of activities. We had a wonderful showing of members' art at the Cornell Museum Crest Theatre Gallery from November 4, 2010 through January 30, 2011.

Scholarship recipients were given their awards at Northwood University on February 25, 2011 at the reception for "Across the Spectrum".  These very talented young ladies from the Alexander Dreyfoos School of the Arts are: Brittany Bennet, who received the scholarship in memory of Rita Schwartz, $2,000, Philomena Polizzi, NAWA Florida Scholarship, $1,000 and Shae James, NAWA Florida Scholarship, $1,000.

We added two new venues this spring giving our members more opportunities to exhibit their work. The Village Studio Gallery in Delray Beach hosted an exhibition from January 27 through March 14, 2011 titled NAWA FL at Village Studio Gallery.  Tom Rossetti Fine Art is currently hosting "Vision•Vistas•Views" in Pompano Beach, FL. The opening took place last Friday, March 18. One of our members, Patti Robbins from San Luis Obispo, CA attended with her husband and mother and brought samples of their flavored extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars for members to taste. What a delightful surprise! Our Hospitality Chair, Jean Goddeau, who always makes sure our openings are amply supplied, prepared home made meatballs along with so many goodies that no one went home hungry. One artwork has been sold so far at this venue. To see pictures of these openings visit http://www.facebook.com/ClayForms

Preparations are under way for a joint juried exhibit with NAWA National to be held at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. Our venue chair, Bernice Harwood, is working with Susan Hammond, Executive Director of NAWA in New York. We are also scheduled for the Crest Theatre at the Cornell Museum and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. See “Save these dates” for schedule.

The fall 2010 board and general meeting was well attended with a marvelous hands-on clay demonstration presented by our membership chair, Diane Lublinski. Her award winning sculpture may be seen at: clayforms.com

The spring board and general meeting featured a presentation/workshop by Glenn Heino This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it our web designer. He helped members prepare jpeg images for entries to shows and exhibits as well as for our NAWA FL Artists' Portfolios page: http://nawafl.com/. Currently there are twenty-nine members showing their portfolios.

The annual luncheon took place Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Benvenuto's Restaurant in Boynton Beach, Fl. Our luncheon chair, Cynthia Maronet arranged for Sandra Barghini Coombs, Executive Director of the Armory Art Center to be this year's speaker. Her presentation and slides were enthusiastically received.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board members, committee chairs and volunteers for making all this happen.

Vice President, Jane Mcintyre has worked tirelessly on these exhibits from printing labels to programs, ordering ribbons and helping update membership lists. She has stepped in for me on many occasions due to multiple family situations this past winter and I very much appreciate her extra help.

Lois Barton, Joan Lustig, Carol Grillo, Fern Samuels and Nadine Saitlin did a great job on "Across the Spectrum".

Janice Cohen, Scholarship Chair, makes it look easy to put together the scholarship awards each year, but the members of her committee, Liana Moonie, Jane Mcintyre, Lore Baer and I can vouch for the many hours of work she put in to present these awards to the deserving Dreyfoos students.

An extra thank you to Elizabeth Reed, our treasurer, who had to sort out membership dues that came in staggered and in odd amounts due to different collection dates. It was time consuming and at times frustrating, but she's done an exemplary job.

Lois Barton, Recording and Corresponding Secretary is so efficient that she has been able to help, not only at meetings, but also in hanging artwork for shows.

Diane Lublinski, Membership Chair, along with chairing the Village Art Studio Exhibit, has put together an Excel spreadsheet up to date membership roster so that we can print a membership book. I know she looks forward to our web site being updated so that members will be able to input their own information!

A thank you to Grace Fishenfeld who has done a terrific job on our publicity for exhibits. Because of her, NAWA articles appear frequently in the West Palm Beach Fine Arts Examiner http://www.examiner.com/fine-arts-in-west-palm-beach/work-by-nawa-florida-chapter-artists-visons-vistas-and-views-picture along with slideshows that Nadine Saitlin graciously prepares for publication.

And thank you to Helene Kleiner for gathering information and publishing our newsletter twice each year.

Lore Baer, Presentation Book Chair, has been increasing her technology skills and collecting jpegs from members for our digital frame to be used at openings and for the annual luncheon.

And a big thank you to Bernice Harwood, Venue Chair, for all her hard work finding locations for us and then following through with contracts, etc. Her background and experience as past president and willingness to help has made my job a lot easier.

We send get well wishes to our founder, Liana Moonie, who returned to Connecticut early this season due to health reasons.

Wishing you all a creative and productive summer,
Emalee Andre
